Old bits ripped from front page!!!
The Future? This may look the same but it isn't!!!
Upcoming events include our annual Golf Day at Lanhydrock Golf Club on 9th May 2008, this is being run in aid of Motor Neurone Disease. It is proving very popular so don't delay if you intend to take part and haven't yet booked in a team. Club members are still being urged to reach out & grab sponsorship for holes etc..
We are venturing in to Boxing as well. On May 17th 2008 their is a Boxing Tournament at Lakeview Country Club. Full details through the above link but it costs £7 a head & proceeds will be directed towards providing desks for schools in Kenya.
We agreed last week that we would put £500 towards this project from Club International funds and apply for grants to boost the amount that we can contribute, this will be done in partnership with a kenyan Rotary Club. Paul Harrison is the lead from our club & I will ask him to write up a short briefing piece for the web site this week.
Presidents Night at the beginning of March went off very well. A photo or two.. Gerald & President Martin followed by Mrs Jewell & Tony Sandry who did give an excellent short speech.
Apart from the desk project, members of the club have been quietly assisting the District Overseas project team with some odds & ends in the last few weeks. We have managed to acquire some equipment to assist in the kiting out of an A & E Dept at a Kosovan hospital, more items to collect this week hopefully.
Foundation is very quiet at present but we are involved in hosting the visiting GSE Team from South Korea who are in the district between 5th April & 4th May. We are hosting them from 29th April until 4th May assisted by Wadebridge and Camelford Rotary Clubs. They will be spending 30th April on a vocational day and then doing a presentation at Bodmin Club in the evening. May Day will be cultural so it will be interesting to hear their thoughts on 'Obby Oss' after the day spent in the company of Wadebridge Rotarians. More on that later if you are lucky!!
56th President's Night
On Saturday 1st March the Club celebrated its 56th President's Night at the Metropole Hotel, Padstow.
President Martin Taylor was joined by guests of honor Rotary District Governor Kevin Farley, District Governor Elect Alan Jones, President of Bodmin Probus Club Roger Pike, and Lions President Jon Hancock.
President Martin said, "The evening was a great success", and thanked all those who had given so much to Rotary and Rotary projects during the year.
Entertainment was provided by local vocalist Paul Michael.
Photos awaited ....
Meeting 06/02/08
Rotarian Tony Sandry gave a 'My Job' presentation. Unfortunately I was away for most of the meeting so missed the bulk of it. What I did hear though was interesting. From memory he says he spent forty years working in the Mental Health field. As such he was heavily involved and still is in steps taken to integrate those with learning disabilities back into the community by the provision of sheltered or controlled housing. He covered the good and bad points and was quite candid about what with hind sight could have been done better. We could all do with a crystal ball at times! If any club members read this and want to email me with more detail for this paragraph ....
Preparations are moving on towards Presidents Night on 1st March, entertainment is now confirmed and a coach has been booked - again for members money to me secures a seat on a first come first served basis!!
The clubs Foundation & International Committees met last Tuesday (05/02/08). Briefly the outcome of that is to hold another quiz night, sort out the Sports (Gentlemans??) Night. A club member is going to go to Belarus later in the year to once & for all sort out the detail of the planned project, this should combined with planned contact with a local Rotary Club in the area mean we can finalise exactly what is needed. Chinese whisper syndrome can be a real problem when trying to pin down exact details on some of these overseas projects.
Too much writing no pictures so that's it for this visit!!
Photos & emails from visiting scholars now here
Meeting 03/02/08
Rotarian Barry Kressinger attended Partners Night and gave a presentation of the District Overseas Project Teams trip to kosova last year and an update of this years proposed activities. I'm grateful to him as he stood in for our planned speaker who had to step backwards at the last minute. The Kosova trip had been covered on the local BBC News and assisted by Liskeard Fire Officers involved the exporting and driving of a range of emergency service vehicles in one convoy.
27/01/08 -Burns Night
Held at the Westberry Hotel last night, excellent evening the hard work put in by Ian(Jock), Malcolm & Steve really paid off so thank you to all of you. It also raised a significant amount of money towards the Clubs International Fund, I don't know exactly how much yet hence no published figure.
A quick straw pole of those I spoke to makes me believe that we should do it again next year. There was a significant amount of whisky consumed which I believe is traditional at these events and we do try to uphold traditions and customs!
Paul Harrison produced a very amusing toast to the 'Lassies', I was initially worried when he stood up with three sheets of typed paper in his hand!!
Steve, Malcolm & Ian supported by piper about to do the honours with the haggis.23/01/08
No speaker or anything this week so I am left to fill the gap with some idle gossip. I went to Truro Boscawen Club on Monday evening with Jo & Sharon from last years GSE Team to give our final presentation on Norway. It's been good fun but I think we are all eager to move on to new adventures now. Excellent meal and the atmosphere was very friendly & relaxed. We are aiming to meet up mid February to try & finalise a charity project - hopefully positive news on that later!
We have a Burns Night tomorrow night which should be entertaining, ticket sales have been good so hopefully it will be something that can become an annual event.
Plans are progressing slowly for the visit of the Ambassadorial Scholars next week, look at the events page for details so far. Any club members reading this (no that is not a joke) who are interested in taking part please get in touch with me if I don't have your name on the lists yet. Thanks.
BOY'S CONFESSION:
"Bless me Father, for I have sinned. I have been with a loose girl".
The priest asks, "Is that you, little Johnny Parisi?"
"Yes, Father, it is."
"And who was the girl you were with?"
"I can't tell you, Father, I don't want to ruin her reputation."
"Well, Johnny, I'm sure to find out her name sooner or later, so you may as well tell me now.
Was it Tina Minetti?"
"I cannot say."
"Was it Teresa Volpe?"
"I'll never tell."
"Was it Nina Capelli?"
"I'm sorry, but I cannot name her."
"Was it Cathy Piriano?"
"My lips are sealed."
"Was it Rosa Di Angelo, then?"
"Please, Father, I cannot tell you."
The priest sighs in frustration. "You're very tight lipped, Johnny Parisi, and I admire that.
But you've sinned and have to atone. You cannot be an altar boy now for 4 months. Now you go and behave yourself."Johnny walks back to his pew, and his friend Nino slides over and whispers,
"What'd you get?"
"4 months vacation and five good leads."
I am assuming I will be told soon enough if I need to get rid of the above...

Presentation by Allan Foad on a charity he works with that I knew nothing about before hand. It is called Fairbridge which does an outstanding amount of work in relation to youth, their web site is worth a read.
Quote from their web page " Based in 15 of the most disadvantaged areas in England, Scotland and Wales, Fairbridge supports young people aged 13-25 who are not in education, employment or training – giving them the motivation, confidence and skills they need to change their lives."
Update on our London Marathon entrant (Mike Wheeler) his twisted ankle is improving one more week or less & he should be back to full training. If any of you see him give him some encouragement.
Still eagerly awaiting some suggestions for the below - no response means one of a number of things amongst which - either you like it or no one is looking (except my Mum!!)
I'm aware that the side panels of this page have been static for a long time now & I need to change them, if any of you have specific requests send me an email & I will consider it. philbullen@bodminrotary.org.uk

There was another gathering of the Overseas Project Team the week before last. The District has obtained another couple of Ambulances, and a Fire Engine is in the offing so we will hopefully be able to assist a couple of other clubs in District with those projects. We are still looking at an Ambulance for Belarus but we still need to confirm fully that the Hospital can afford to maintain it. A club member or two are looking at the possibility of travelling out there during february to finally get the answers we need.
I saw our London Marathon entrant (Mike Wheeler) last night, he has twisted his ankle but should be back to full training in two weeks. If any of you see him give him some encouragement.
Subject: Little Johnny does it again
The teacher asked the class to use the word "fascinate" in a sentence.
Molly put up her hand and said, "My family went to my granddad's farm, and we all saw his pet sheep. It was fascinating."
The teacher said, "That was good, but I wanted you to use the word "fascinate, not fascinating".
Sally raised her hand. She said, "My family went to see Rock City and I was "fascinated." The teacher said, "Well, that was good Sally, but I wanted you to use the word "fascinate".
Little Johnny raised his hand. The teacher hesitated because she had been burned by Little Johnny before. She finally decided there was no way he could damage the word "fascinate", so she called on him. Johnny said, "My aunt Gina has a sweater with ten buttons, but her breasts are so big she can only fasten eight."
The teacher sat down and cried.
December so far:-
Last night was Turkey Supper night for the club the usual meal as the name suggests, I have been told it and the comedian were very good. I can't give more detail unfortunately as I wasn't there!!
Members of the club have been busy over the last week and a half with street collections in Bodmin main street and this week in the foyer of Morrisons. Proceeds from this go towards providing Christmas Parcels to try & spread the spirit of Christmas in the town. The parcels were packed up Saturday night and deliveries started on Sunday morning. As I've said before a heart felt thank you to those who have supported us in this through donations, also thank you to those from the club who have endured a few very cold hours collecting!!
We have a few other activites over the next month or so which shoud be quite interesting.

Brief recent news applying to club, last week Becky Healey and Paddy Craig joined us for our meeting where they presented a cheque for £2522 to the Merlin Project. This was raised through their completion of The Marathon of Britain (175 miles in six days)with Rotarian Phil Bullen as Team Qdos.
