Visit of Ambassadorial Scholars February 2008

Visiting Ambassadorial Scholars 01- 03/02/08

This weekend we have hosted two Rotarian Scholars who are attending a lanquage school in Plymouth and living with local families in Plymouth.

Je Hee from South Korea and Han from Taiwan. There visit started with Fish & Chips at a well known Bodmin premises folowed by a couple of pints out at the Jamaica Inn escorted by Bodmins finest Friday night gentlemens drinking club!!

Saturday morning was a demonstration in fish cutting and cooking Fish & Chips, I have to say it appeared to be the highlight for our visitors and was requested by them. A trip to the Eden project followed with a Cornish Night at a Rotarians house in the evening.

Sunday morning was occupied with a short walk from Bodmin to the Blisland Inn along the camel Trail, I don't think Je Hee enjoyed this too much but she only got one blister!! I suppose the rain soon after we started didn't help.

I thought it was an excellent weekend which I hope both Han and Je Hee enjoyed they were really good company and a pleasure to be with. Again a big thank you to those who assisted with the transport, hosting and entertaining etc - you know who you are!!

Emails folowing the visit...

Dear Friends in Bodmin Rotary club,

I've been feeling sad since I got out of Phil's car (his English was always too clever for me). However, I had a really good time with all of you. How lucky I am! We had a good fast trip from Plymouth to Bodmin even though Peter had just celebrated his 72 nd . At Martin's house I had a warm bed and unlimited wine and lager in the fridge. How lucky I am! I also had a special lesson in how to cook fish & chips in a Bodmin restaurant established for more than 40 years. How lucky I am! I think I am the only Taiwanese person who has visited the Eden project protected by two senior policemen. How lucky I am! Then, I enjoyed a fantastic homemade Cornish pasty in the home of 2 Rotarians, father and son, but who looked like brothers!

Of course, I will give a presentation when I am back in Taiwan for older Taiwanese Rotarians about what happened, especially on Friday at midnight. Apart from ME, I bet there is no one who enjoyed the final activity. I thought that camels should only walk on a sunny day!!^_^

These moments will stay with me forever. If anybody has the opportunity to visit Taiwan , please contact the most handsome policeman I had ever seen in that photo.

Of course it's not MR. President.

Cheers!!!

Han

Visit to Bodmin of Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholars 2006

The Rotary Club of Bodmin hosted three Rotary International Foundation Ambassadorial Scholars on the weekend of Friday 1st September to Sunday 3rd September 2006. The Scholars, sponsored by Rotary Clubs in their home countries, are here to improve their skills in English Language at College in Plymouth.

The Rotary Club of Bodmin were very pleased to be able to show the scholars some Cornish hospitality, assisted by the Mayor of Bodmin, the proprietors of Bodmin Jail, the National Trust, Lanhydrock Golf Club, and the Rotary Club of Wadebridge.

At a civic reception on Saturday, Bodmin Mayor, Lance Kennedy said, “It is a pleasure to be able to show Bodmin in such a positive way to international visitors”. He arranged for the Scholars, accompanied by Rotary President Steve Winston, and local Rotarians to visit the court building, and see a re-enactment of the trial of Matthew Weeks for the murder of Charlotte Dymond. Maria Lervolina said, “It was very interesting to see how the justice system operated many years ago.”

After the Civic Reception, the Scholars visited to Charlestown, and then toured Bodmin Moor in the mist, accompanied by Rotarian Steve Winston and his wife. Rotary Foundation Chairman Geoff Cole and his wife Sue hosted a party on Saturday evening for the Scholars and over thirty local Rotarians and their wives.

At the party, Yuka Goto demonstrated her exceptional talents as a flautist, playing some western pieces, and traditional Japanese music.

Special thanks to Geoff Cole and Sue for hosting the scholars.

On Sunday, joined by Rotarians from Wadebridge Rotary Club, the National Trust entertained the group at Lanhydrock House with a history of the Robartes Family, followed by a tour of the house. After lunch at Lanhydrock Golf club, the Scholars were taken on a visit to Padstow, ending their weekend with a welcome tea in Bodmin.

Rotary President Steve Winston said, “It has been an honor to be selected to host the International Ambassadorial Scholars in Bodmin. I am sure that these young people will have fond memories of Cornwall for a long time to come. It is very pleasing to forge new links with fellow Rotarians around the world, which must lead to a greater understanding of each other's cultures and our Cornish way of life .”
